About this image

On 13 April 2017 Cassini was inside Saturn's shadow and looked back. The Sun is almost exactly behind the planet (phase angle 179.2°), so the rings glow with sunlight scattered forward through them, and the night side is lit only by light from the rings, which brings out storm clouds. The bright band across the upper disk is that ringshine seen through the thin C ring, whose ringlets cross it in silhouette. The dark band over the rings is Saturn's shadow; the thin rim around the limb is sunlight filtering through the upper atmosphere. The faint arc beyond the main rings is the G ring, and Mimas, Janus and Pandora are in the frame.

How it was made

  • 223 frames from Cassini's wide-angle camera: 125 red frames for the detail, coloured with the red, green and blue frames of the same sequence
  • Calibrated data (CISSCAL, I/F) from NASA's Planetary Data System; exposures from 0.05 to 38 s merged
  • Reprojected with SPICE navigation into one 8000×5000 view at 38 km per pixel, seen from 658,000 km
  • The frames span about five and a half hours (05:40–11:17 UTC) and are shown as one instant, 08:33 UTC

Notes

  • The stars alone were brightened 4×.
  • Small gaps with no usable data in any frame are filled from the surrounding data. Nothing was cloned, added or generated with AI.
  • Beyond the G ring the sky fades to black on purpose: the faint E ring there can't be told apart from reflections inside the camera.
  • Earth is behind Saturn at this moment, so it isn't visible.
  • Ian Regan (May 2017) and Elisabetta Bonora & Marco Faccin (July 2017) made mosaics of this sequence before the calibrated archive was released (April 2018). This version is rebuilt from the calibrated full-resolution data.
